Lochranza Caravan and Camping Site

The Caravan & Camping Site
A quiet corner away from the road with the capacity for sixty pitches in three areas, one for caravans and motor homes, one for tents of all descriptions, and a hard standing for those motor homes that cannot travel on wet grass.

The turf is on an alluvial base, gravel with a covering of turf, reasonably level and kept mown.

Toilet/Bathing Facilities
Around the site we have ample drinking water stand pipes and electric hook-ups. Our toilet facility, new in 1998 and regularly improved, provides: Ladies Toilet Room with 4 wcs and 4 wash basins, hand drier, Water Bunny. Ladies Shower Room with 3 showers, 2 wash basins, hair drier, room heater. Gents have 5 urinals, 3 wcs, 3 showers, 5 wash basins, hand and hair driers, 3 shaving sockets.

All rooms have lots of mirrors, good lighting, and an ample supply of hot water. The showers are widely acclaimed as the 'best shower I've ever had!'.

Wash-ups
The wash up area is covered, there are 5 sinks with drainers plus ample very hot water. (Please use the plugs!)

Laundry
The laundry provides a commercial sized Washing Machine (token operated) and Drier (50p coins), a superb Spinner and sink with hot and cold water, a table and chair. An electric iron with ironing board can be hired.

Landscape
Here is a landscape described by many as 'the most beautiful place in the world'. The road over the mountains allows breathtaking views of jagged peaks and hillsides blanketed in heather and bracken with tumbling water cutting white gashes through the rock.

The long downhill stretch hints of softness but retains that comfortable feeling of wonderment in exquisite peace and quiet.

Greys and browns give way to a thousand shades of green speckled with the white wooly coats of a few hundred black faced sheep. Suddenly there is Lochranza nestling on the level valley floor with the Chalmadale Burn (stream) meandering through the golf course to the sea.

On three sides the mountains are steep giving a magical effect to the beauty of Lochranza Castle ruin on its promontory which forms the inner harbour for small boats. To stand here at sunset is to know the meaning of peace.

Living with Nature
There cannot be many places where such an abundance of wildlife is congregated in such a small area. Throughout the year the wild red deer and rabbits share the hill grazing with the sheep and wander all around the village and golf course.

In the evening and at night it is normal to see up to 20 deer grazing in and around the Caravan & Camping Site though due to the misguided kindliness of some of our visitors who have the urge to feed them the number is reducing. Less visible are the red squirrels, badgers, hedgehogs and otter.

Some 30 species of birds feed and live here with the Golden Eagle being dominant. Around the shores of the loch there is an ever increasing colony of seals sometimes visited by porpoise, dolphins, basking sharks and the occasional whale.

Activities
Hill Walking is possibly the most popular of all with the site being situated so close to such wonderful hill country. Access to the mountain paths is within 200 yards of the Site. Golf of course on our own delightful golf course, see next section.

Cycling, Pony Trekking, and fishing are among the other pusuits. Then again, not everyone wants or needs to be active! Lazing about on the sea shores or beside one's caravan or tent, perhaps a good book, even a daily newspaper, with a coffee or a glass of some description, who could wish it better?

Lochranza Golf Course (The Augusta of Arran!)
Here is something special for golfers of every standard. Once described as 'possibly the most interesting golf course developed in Scotland in the1990's' it has been designed for holiday golfing pleasure.

The imaginative design has ensured that there isn't a bad hole on the golf course, every shot asks questions, and if you haven't got the answers the setting is so stunningly spectacular that, hey, it really doesn't matter!

We don't expect you to play perfect golf, not many play to their handicaps, you are allowed to take divots have the odd air shot or duff, have your dog on a lead, wear what you like. You are on holiday, relax and enjoy
