Out & About
Outside the park you'll find the charming village of Allonby, once the home of the Midge fishing fleet. The village has still retained its character and you can while away a pleasant afternoon wandering down the old cobbled back streets. The village has several traditional inns, like thousands before you; you can enjoy a homemade ice cream from 'Twentymans' on the sea front. People come from miles around to do just that! Then as you stroll back towards Spring Lea, you can take in the beautiful sight of the Scottish Hills across the Solway Firth.
The advantage of staying at Spring Lea is that there are literally dozens of attractions within a short drive of the park
For sports lovers the action starts on the door step as Allonby is well know for its windsurfing. Golf courses abound, Silloth's being the most well known and there is the multi-million dock redevelopment 5 miles away at Maryport with the Lake District Coast Aquarium.
Close by you'll come across the charming town of Cockermouth where you can take in the Jennings brewery tour or visit Wordsworth's birthplace.
Take a southerly direction from Maryport and you'll find the pretty Georgian town of Whitehaven where you'll discover the award winning attraction at the Beacon. This tells the story of Whitehavens's industrial and maritime heritage. Just down the road from here is Ravenglass, the start of the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway, the famous 'La'al Ratty which will take you from the Cumbrian coast to England's highest hills.
Follow the A66 further down the road and you'll come to Keswick, the gateway to the most beautiful countryside in Britain—The Lake District National Park.
